What is a CSA?
CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) programs provide consumers with a direct connection to a local farmer while providing farmers with a stable market. Consumers pay a subscription fee to receive a share of farm products. Members also acknowledge the challenges of farming, such as extreme weather events, which may affect yields. They accept the risks and understand that such circumstances are part of producing food.
What is a Dynamic CSA?
The term “dynamic” is added to describe a program with a flexible structure for sourcing products. The Guzikowski Farm will coordinate this program which will source from our farm as well as from other farms in the region each week. This arrangement offers expanded product choices and lets your food purchasing power support multiple family farms that use organic methods or Integrated Pest Management. This 20 week program is planned to start in June and end in October.
What farm products can you expect?
A variety of seasonal vegetables are available from June to October. Planned crops include: apples, arugula, Asian greens, beans(multiple varieties), beets, blueberries, boy choy, broccoli, broccoli raab, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, chard, collards, cucumbers, eggplant, herbs, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, leeks, melons, mushrooms, salad mix, okra, onions, peppers, peaches, potatoes, radish, spinach, peas, squashes (summer & fall), sweet potatoes, tomatoes (cherry, heirloom, & beefsteak varieties), turnips and zucchini.
*Apples, peaches, and Asian pears are still challenging to grow organically in our area. So, we try to source these fruits from growers who use low spray or Integrated Pest Management when organic is not available. Unlike other programs, fruit is included in your produce share, at no additional charge.
*Eggs from pastured hens will be included in some share options. Hens are not fed soybeans or GMOs.
What if there are items that you are not familiar with?
While part of the fun of a CSA is trying new foods, if there is an item from the list that you definitely won’t use, please list it at the bottom of your application and we will try provide alternate items for you. Also, there will be a Facebook page where the weekly produce list will be updated and members can ask questions and share recipes.
Who is the Dynamic CSA best suited for?
If you are flexible, enjoy a variety of seasonal produce and like to support local agriculture, this may be for you. Every season there is interest from people who state that they just want “cheap organic food.” That is not the philosophy this program is based on. This Dynamic CSA is designed to be a mutually beneficial relationship that provides consumers with a diverse variety of locally produced food in a way that supports sustainable agriculture. Cheap is not our purpose. If this philosophy speaks to you, please join us.
There are 3 share options to choose from:
- All Produce share provides about 8 produce items each week
- Produce Plus share provides about 6 produce items and 1 dozen eggs each week
- Produce Plus Half Dozen share provides about 7 produce items and a half dozen eggs each week
FULL SHARE PRICE: $500 pick up for 20 weeks
HALF SHARE PRICE: All half shares are $265 and pick up for 10 weeks. Half share members pick up every other week for a total of 10 weeks.
- These are estimates based on expectations during a good season. However, farming has inherent risks from severe weather, plant disease, pest damage, etc. that may diminish the share quantity. While a potential benefit of a Dynamic CSA is the ability to mitigate such risks through multiple farm sources, there can be no guarantee.
- A portion of the fee covers the costs of fuel and administration of the multiple farm format.
- The egg supply is limited. If you would like a share that includes eggs, please secure a membership as soon as possible.
Payments are non-refundable once the season begins.
