Remembering those in our lives we have loved and lost is a central tradition in Judaism. We remember and honor those we hold dear by reciting the Kaddish on their yahrzeit (the Jewish anniversary of their death), whenever we recite the Yizkor (memorial) prayer, and by placing their names for perpetual memorial in a visible way in your synagogue home. The Joseph H. Levine Memorial Alcove, located in the lobby of Kol Emet, is a beautiful way to honor your loved one’s memory.
Below is a list of questions and answers that will provide you with the necessary information to make a decision regarding whether add the name(s) of your loved ones to the Joseph H. Levine Memorial Alcove would be meaningful to you at this time.
What information will be engraved?
Full name, birth year, and death year only
What is the cost?
Each name will be engraved for a one-time $500 donation.
May I charge this amount?
Yes, you may charge this amount on your Visa, MasterCard, or Discover. There is a 3% processing fee to use a credit card.
May I pay for this amount over time?
Yes, you may arrange with the office to pay over time. However, the name will be engraved only when the entire amount is remitted.
How can I be sure all of the information is correct?
Each name and accompanying birth and death year information will be sent to your for proof reading and approval. You will be able to review the information, make appropriate changes, approve it, and return it to the synagogue before the name will be engraved.
Will my loved one's name still be mentioned at the weekly Shabbat service if I do not wish to place their name on the Joseph H. Levine Memorial Alcove?
Yes, if the person’s yahrzeit date is in our records, then the name will be read by Rabbi Anna at the weekly service coinciding with the yahrzeit.
Can we only place the names of relaties on the Joseph H. Levine Memorial Alcove?
You may place the name of any person special to you on the Joseph H. Levine Memorial Alcove.
Does the person have to be Jewish to have their name engeraved on the wall?
No.
